Nepal is a country where innumerable Buddhist pilgrim sites are located be it a beautiful monastery or huge Stupas. Though a large population of the country follows Hinduism, Buddhism is the second religion with the highest following. Myriad monasteries, old or newly built, are scattered all over the country.

Nepal is the perfect choice for anyone interested in Buddhism and to top it all, Lord Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, was born in Nepal at a place called Lumbini located in the Terai Plains of Nepal. Buddhist pilgrims flock to Lumbini almost all around the year. In Lumbini, one can observe the exact place where Lord Buddha was born and visit other places like the scared pond, King Ashoka’s pillars, including any monasteries and temples erected by Buddhist nations like Thailand, China, Japan, Burma, Sri Lanka.
Kathmandu Valley is adorned with popular Buddhist sites like Swayambhunath ‘Money Temple’, perched atop a hill, offering panoramic views of Kathmandu and Boudhanath Stupa, the largest stupa in Kathmandu Valley. Nepal has sacred Hindu temples and shrines some of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and is the popular destination for Hindu pilgrims from around the world. These temples and shrines located here are considered some of the holiest ones which devotees visit all year round.
Kathmandu Valley has numerous Hindi sites like Pashupatinath Temple located at the banks of the holy Bagmati River. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is believed to be one of the most important and holiest temples of Lord Shiva.

Manakamna Temple located outside Kathmandu Valley is another important Hindu pilgrimage site. The temple is situated atop a mountain at an altitude of 1300 meters and can be reached by a cable car ride of about 20 minutes.

Muktinath located in the Mustang region is another sacred site with Muktinath Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Muktinath is revered as a site for achieving liberation (moksha) where 108 water spouts are located. It’s believed that taking a bath in all these spouts will free you from sins.
 
Janakpur Dham is the birthplace of Goddess Sita where many beautiful temples and shrines are located.
