Dolpa Region
Dolpa: Shey Gompa, Vijer and Saldan
Our expedition travel- searching for the Ghost of the Mountains in Upper Dolpa (Shey-phuksundo National Park) and Annapurna circuit Trek (Annapurna Conservation Area)- with expert Wildlife Biologist Bikram Shrestha and explore hill-top monasteries and experience the traditional Buddhist culture
Our Responsible Travel award winning snow leopard tour is offering the chance to "track the elusive snow leopard on foot". The sole goal of this trek is to seek out the snow leopard, one of the planet's most elusive - and endangered - creatures. This trek is offering a few adventurous travelers a fascinating insight into upper Dolpa and Annapurna circuit, an area famous for snow leopard research, photography and filming. Marron Trek is one of the first Nepal operators to access the area, with a great success rate of sightings - the picture shown here was recently taken by the expert.
Our tours are led by expert Bikram Shrestha in snow leopard core habitat. Mr. Shrestha completed his M.Sc. in 2004 and then he has been actively involved in snow leopard research work in different mountain region of Nepal. Based in a comfortable, fully serviced campsite, this trip not only allows you the opportunity to track one of the world’s most elusive animals, but also to explore one of Nepal’s most beautiful regions. Our tours are designed to visit the picturesque Buddhist villages and monasteries. You will have the chance to meet the amazingly hardy mountain people in the region and will come to understand a little of the Buddhism they practice.
Whilst the snow leopard is the main focus of the tour, the region has a surprising array of fauna for such a seemingly wild and desolate landscape. Blue sheep or Nawar, the staple of snow leopard diet are found in large numbers, with wolves, wild yaks and even brown bears found in the remote valleys, whilst the brilliant blue skies are patrolled by golden eagle, bearded vultures and Himalayan Griffons who soar above the snow capped mountains.
Dolpo is the most remote and least developed region of Nepal. This region consists of the highest land of human inhabitation in the world which is situated between the Tibetan Plateau and the Dhaulagiri Himalayan range. Due to the inaccessibility of transportation, this area is still unexplored and untouched by outsiders. The entire region was permitted for the tourism while Mathesons stepped his footprint at this mystic land in 1989 for the exploration of The Snow Leopard and Snell grove.
Upon glancing through the geography, Dolpo has the largest national park and Conservation area of the nation. This national park has sustained an abundance of wild life including Musk Deer, Himalayan Blue Sheep and the legendary elusive Snow Leopard. It is also home to a fascinating race of Tibetan speaking people. The tough highlanders take their yaks onto the Tibetan Plateau for grazing and exchange barley for Tibetan rock salt.
We commence this wonderful adventure from Juphal Village encountering with interesting places, people, villages, valleys and serene forest of pines, oaks and rhododendron. The trek passes many gigantic mountain ranges and over the Numala pass at 5,400m till we reach the Phoksundo lake at Ringmo village in the "Phoksundo National Park".
As our mission is to entrap the wildlife including Snow Leopard in your eyes, the trip highlights its habitant at Shey Gompa , Vijer and Saldan. Besides this, we won’t miss to enjoy the beauty of the deep blue waters of the Phoksundo Lake and the surrounding snow peaks of Kanjirowa Himalayan range, isolated village of Ringmo and its Monastery.
The first time Oscar Award nominated movie from Nepal in foreign Language “The Caravan” or “The Himalayan” was also choreographed in this very land, which got a grand success in the world.
